Lou Malnaties
Probably the biggest thing Chicago is know for among foodies, is the deep dish pizza. This re-invention of an American favorite has definitely become a staple in the culinary world. Though there is a hot debate over who created the first deep dish, the restaurant that claims to posses this honor, and is most widely accepted as the best if not the first, is Lou Malnati's.
Now before I get to far into this post, it is important to point out that I never actually made it into one of their stores. This wasn't a big deal for me as their delivery service is quite good, and if you find yourself in Chicago looking for something to eat, but can't get out of the hotel I definitely recommend it.
When you get a deep dish Pizza form Lou Malnati's you have a couple choices, the Malnati Chicago Classic, and the Lou, they also just have plain cheese. sausage or pepperoni but these were the two we tried. Both of these are great pizzas, but if you are new to this, I recommend starting with the classic. Claiming to be the original deep dish pizza, this one is definitely done right. It is built on a great crust, layered with Italian sausage, then coated with all the delicious house made mozzarella this pie deserves, and the sauce is poured on top. Each slice feels like it must be at least a pound of toppings, and unless its cold (which is also delicious) don't try to eat this thing without a fork.
The Lou is pretty much the same concept, except it includes spinach mushrooms and Roma tomatoes. It is worth mentioning that there is also a crustless option offered which uses sauasage as the base so that it's gluten free, as well as a variety of appetizers, and some pastas, salads, soups and sandwiches if you are feeling like expanding a little. However when you have the option of what may be the worlds best deep dish pizza, why go with anything else?
